The grip and tactile experience of a game controller is key for peak performance. Combined with a unique pattern the brand becomes tangible.
In competitive gaming the tactile experience of a game controller is key for becoming a better player. SMAL helped SCUF to introduce a new level of tactile experience on their game controllers to provide an advantage in every game and create a consistent and recognizable branded element.
Our vision was to introduce a new level of tactile experience on the game controller to provide secure grip and comfort for extensive durations of gameplay. So the user can truly immerse into the gameplay and become a better player.
Premium appearance was an integral part of this project. To achieve this goal we set three foundational pillars to inculcate into our design:
Consistence in haptics and visual schematic
Precision and clean execution
Progressive design through algorithmic modeling techniques.
According to the placement, the execution of the pattern is adapted to the specific needs and requirements. For instance, the scribe line patterns on the paddles scatter light in various directions but are less obtrusive on a tactile level.
Algorithmic aided design (AAD) is a modelling technique that allows the creation of highly complex and adaptive surface patterns and skins, that cannot be reached with any other technique. We created an parametric design algorithm in Grasshopper for Rhino 3D to create the SCUF Premium Performance Patterns.
AAD allows us to program dependencies, rules and adaptive behaviors as we need them.
It gives control to tune manipulative parameters precisely and on the fly and align with the client on the desired look quickly.
We can generate production ready surface data, that can be further processed by engineers and toolmakers. We make sure to find the right format to ensure a smooth data handover.
