Developing a unified visual language and robust Drupal multi-site architecture to scale Enphase’s digital presence globally. We empowered the launch of 50+ products across 60+ localized websites on five continents, balancing emotional storytelling for homeowners with data-rich toolkits for professional installers.

Challenge

Enphase is a global solar energy company that sells to two audiences with almost nothing in common: homeowners deciding whether to invest in solar and battery storage, and professional installers who need fast, technical answers to run their business. One site, one visual language, had to serve both without diluting either — homeowners needed an emotional case for energy independence, installers needed tools, not tone. The harder constraint was usability: neither audience could be asked to dig for what they needed, which meant UX decisions — not just visual ones — had to carry the weight of making complex technical content approachable.

Approach

We split the strategy by audience instead of building one generic message and adjusting the volume.
For homeowners, the site leads with energy independence and safety at home, not spec sheets. Photorealistic content and custom illustration translate technical microinverter and battery-storage detail into imagery people can read at a glance, including a screensaver-style video built to hold attention rather than explain features line by line.
For installers, we built dedicated tools that support the sales and install process end to end:

  • Local installer finder
  • Module compatibility calculator
  • System estimator
  • Documentation center
  • EV-charger selector

The same principle shaped every touchpoint — cut anything that doesn't earn its place — which is what turned multi-step technical lookups into single-purpose tools instead of PDFs and spec sheets. We also redesigned the physical materials installers rely on in the field, including the Quick Installer Guide and data sheets, so the same visual language carried from screen to print.

Outcome

The new design system eventually shipped across more than 60 countries on 5 continents from a single, unified visual language rather than region-by-region variants. Installers moved from multi-step lookups scattered across PDFs and spec sheets to single-purpose tools, while photorealistic and illustrative content made technical product and energy-data information legible to homeowners at a glance, rather than requiring them to parse spec sheets to understand the value. Our Figma-to-Notion feedback pipeline processed more than 5,000 stakeholder comments across content, visuals, and code without derailing the project timeline, which was the real test of a rollout at this scale.
