Smart energy at home, work, or play: Creating a premium web experience for a brands' first ever portable energy system for consumers.


Introduction

Enphase is a global energy management technology company that provides residential and commercial solar and energy storage solutions.

As a long-term partner who collaborated with Enphase on a extended range of projects, SMAL was approached with the task of supporting the launch of their first ever portable energy system, the IQ PowerPack 1500 – a versatile system to charge a range of personal devices on the road or at home.

 

This multi-disciplinary project ranged from designing the website and it's accompanying ordering experience, to creating packaging designs, manuals, and marketing assets, including product launch videos.


Shaping the experience

Throughout the design process, we kept the most important factors at the center of our decisions: a clear consumer focus and the goal of conveying the products' features and its accessories clearly and in an appealing way to make it stand out from competitors.

 

The design and implementation of the page strives to be seamless, intuitive and efficient. By offering the user clear navigation, a detailed product description and high-quality images, we also put a focus on an enhanced ordering experience. By being able to directly bundle your purchase with fitting accessories and visualizing those bundles in real-time, we ensure to have a user-friendly ordering experience that leaves the customer informed and satisfied.


Designing the assets

The page came to life with a variety of assets that we tailored to the website content. Our main objective was visualizing the core features and use cases and offering insights into the products’ powerful technology.

 

We chose to use studio shots with neutral backgrounds and played with light to accentuate the elegant design and the high quality building materials, making the product itself really stand out.

 

In addition, we made use of environmental renderings and animations, placing the product and its accessories within actual use case scenarios, indoors and outdoors. This helped with conveying context while giving a sense of scale and real-life behavior.

 

These assets in combination with lifestyle footage of the IQ PowerPack 1500 in use offered a wide range of visualizations, presenting the product clearly and comprehensibly.


Beyond the webpage; marketing collaterals

As an all-in-one design agency, our work went beyond the digital experience for this product launch. In collaboration with the product and marketing teams at Enphase we designed the product’s and its accessories’ packaging, quick start guides, and an extensive user manual for the IQ PowerPack 1500.


Audiovisual storytelling: creating product videos

In addition to the website and marketing assets we produced, we were also tasked with the creation of two videos to accompany the launch of the IQ PowerPack 1500: a hero video that would be prominently placed on Enphase’s homepage, introducing the new product to a broader audience, and a feature-focused product video that would dive deeper into it’s functions and specifications.

 

Both videos used a mix of 3D and 2D animations and lifestyle footage to convey the main features in an approachable, visually appealing way. By sticking to key messaging and the visual language already introduced through the website, we made sure the resulting outcome of two videos rounded off the whole experience.

Close collaboration, great results

Through the close collaboration of our design and development teams throughout the various steps of this project, we achieved our goal of providing a seamless, engaging experience for Enphase’s first portable energy system.

 

From the website experience with it’s diverse asset library, to creating custom designed packaging and meticulously crafted product videos, this launch once again highlighted SMAL’s ability to expertly and flexibly support product launches.
