Fresenius Kabi is a global healthcare company that specializes in lifesaving medicines and technologies for infusion, transfusion and clinical nutrition. The company’s products and services are used to help care for critically and chronically ill patients. Fresenius Kabi approached us about designing the new QCON medical device that had a more approachable user experience than its predecessor – its name is Conox.
Conox is a non-invasive depth of anesthesia monitor to be used by healthcare professionals in surgery rooms or ICU environments during anesthesia and sedation procedures. It helps to assess the patient’s state of consciousness and the probability of response to noxious stimuli under the hypnotic and analgesic effects. The device helps to personalize the dose of anesthetics better, which reduces negative effects when a patient is waking up. When designing medical devices, they should be the perfect fusion of functionality and form.

Our Approach
The circuit board, as well as the mounting clamp, were provided to us by the client, but here was our challenge: creating and designing a sophisticated and high-tech device that offers the best user experience while still complying with medical device standards. And this all with a fast pace and quick to market/turnaround time.
So, to create different usability concepts, the team analyzed the inner components and explored various component layouts. We dove into the product and user requirements, finding the most compact component layouts and best product proportions. This hands-on approach allowed us to quickly evaluate possible benefits and drawbacks of each usability concept for a flawless user experience.

We created mockups and prototypes for size, proportion, and usability tests, as well as a high-end reference appearance model of the final design. Our design team created a very reliable and compact product with a design that is high-tech yet approachable and optimized to excel in any medical environment.
